All jokes aside, this seems like a handy security feature. It should reduce instances of harassment where strangers could invite you to a group chat by adding your number. By muting this group, you are effectively blocking them all together, which is better than having to individually block these unwanted contacts.
Users will now also be able to completely deactivate group notifications, which is a benefit.Previously you could only mute a group, which still showed you the notification but without any sound alert. But now replacing the ‘muted’ group function is the new ‘Show Notification’ feature, which allows users to completely turn off all alerts from group chats beyond one week, all the way up to a century.
The update has a new camera icon located next to the text input field allows you to take a quick photo to send to one of your contacts.
