The search giant released its top trending searches of 2014, offering up numerous “Top Ten” lists for the
most popular searches on a national and global scale.
This year it has been re-named “A Year in Search: the moments that
defined 2014,” and offers a wide range of stats on a number on the most popular search terms of 2014.
Some of the most popular search queries included the World Cup, Ebola,
MH370, ALS, Flappy Bird, Conchita Wurst, ISIS, Frozen and Sochi, but it
was the late actor/comedian Robin Williams that took top spot.
Along with the most searched topics of the year according to Google, we
also get more details on how people were searching for some of these
terms and the overall result the traffic had on searches from that point
on. For example, with Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 (the fourth most
most searched term of the year), Google said “people stayed hopeful for a
happy ending despite the dim odds,” citing searches for “mh370 found”
being more abundant than searches for “mh370 lost.”

The same time last year, we saw tech devices represented in the top 10, but this year
Google has parsed out electronics gadgets into more specific tech
categories. Apple’s latest smartphone followed by the Galaxy S5 and the
Nexus 6 topped the trending consumer electronics list.
As an incentive, Google is making it easier to find the trending topics of the year
directly from Google Search. For the first time, Google simple search for
[google 2014] will give you a peek at what made the top trending lists
from around the world. And you can follow more insights from the year
