actually working on tech that would allow chargers to snake out of the 
wall and plug into your car automatically, eliminating the need to

This would presumably somewhat resemble the kind of <a href="http://www.techhintz.com/2014/12/double-amputee-becomes-first-to-control.html" target="_blank">articulated robotic arms</a> made famous by comic book villain Doctor Octopus, but less 
threatening and evil. The invention would appear to be driven by a 
desire to make the process of charging Tesla vehicles even more 
convenient, and also by extension more idiot-proof you can’t forget to
 plug in your car when the plug is autonomous, after all.

Backwards compatibility for said tech is a nice bonus, and yet 
another example of how Tesla goes out of its way to bring the benefits 
of its advances to existing, as well as new customers. Already, Tesla 
has begun rolling out battery swap tech that works with existing cars, 
and earlier this year it introduced a warranty extension that applied 
backwards to existing Model S cars already shipped.

 means that its streaming solution is now more directly analogous to 
AirPlay, but it also allows you to use Android, iOS and even web-based 
sources through Chrome to stream your music, podcasts and more.

or desktop to an external device? Just click the cast button and find a 
Google Cast Ready speaker. It’s that easy. 
Once you’re connected, Google Cast Ready speakers will 
pull content directly from the cloud in order to ensure you’re 
getting the best possible audio quality.  
 
The ‘Cast Ready’ speakers that are launching today include devices 
from Sony, LG and Denon, and there should be lots more coming later this
 year. Google also intends to integrate its general Cast capabilities, 
including both audio and visual, to stuff like set-top boxes, television
 sets, consoles and more.
 
Already, there are lots of apps that support Cast audio streaming, 
including Google Play Music, Deezer, Pandora, Rdio, TuneIn, iHeartRadio, NPR One, Pandora, 
and more. It works just like the original video and app-streaming 
Casting, via an in-app button you tap to select your destination device. 
 
Google had already offered audio Casting from compatible software on 
mobile device that used its API, but now we’ll start seeing dedicated 
audio hardware devices that provide the same support that has been 
available via Chromecast streaming dongle and Android TV. It’s much 
closer to what Apple has offered for AirPlay,which already allows users to cast audio to their speakers,and has helped them 
expand their third-party device ecosystem even further since its was introduced.

resident Leslie Baugh got two new bionic limbs. And after just 10 days 
of training, he began using them to move objects from shelf to shelf, 
controlling them with only his thoughts.</div>

Baugh, as Johns Hopkins’ Applied Physics Laboratory reports,
 is the first “bilateral shoulder-level amputee” to wear and control two
 modular prosthetic limbs at the same time. 
 
The technology has been in 
development for more than a decade. It was funded by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency and was tested on Baugh as part of an experimental program run at the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory.</div>

Though his progress is 
groundbreaking, accomplishing this medical first was no easy feat. Baugh
 first had to undergo an intense surgery performed by the institute’s 
medical director, Albert Chi that rearranged (in medical terms, “reinnervated”) the nerves in his chest.</div>

After the surgery was complete, 
the doctors used a 360-degree scanning method to produce a prototype for
 a cast to fit around Baugh’s body. This was meant to function as both a
 support brace for his new limbs and a platform on which his 
reinnervated nerves could make the brain-to-chest nerve connections 
required to move.</div>

on a virtual reality system that was meant to mimic the robot arms he’d 
soon receive. With a collection of nerve monitors stuck to his 
shoulders, Baugh would look at a computer screen as he practiced 
thinking about lifting his elbow up and down. If he successfully made 
the neural connection, the virtual arm would move just how he’d 
intended.</div>

“Once the training sessions were complete, and they released me and let me be the computer … I just go into a whole different world,” Baugh said.</div>

Baugh
 now has access to the areas of motion most people take for granted in 
their upper bodies: shoulders, elbows, wrists, hands. Within all these 
categories, he can move an amazing 30 degrees altogether. Though this 
means he can move cups and balls from one place to another, it’s a 
complicated process. He must move each joint into position separately — 
for instance, first shoulder, then elbow, then wrist.

Baugh’s story comes just months after University of Pittsburgh researchers presented a paper on the recent improvements in robotic limbs. Elsewhere, BrainGate is developing a limb that requires a chip to be implanted in a person’s mind, and Duke University scientists premiered a mind-controlled exoskeleton in June at the opening of the World Cup.</div>

“I think we’re just getting started at this point,” Mike McLoughlin,
 the prosthetic program manager, said in the video. “It’s like the early
 days of the Internet. There’s a tremendous amount of potential ahead of

When it comes to technology, some ideas sound 
great on paper, and there’s often a media frenzy over some. Sometime 
they live up to hype, and even surpass expectations when everyone else 
has been critical. In other cases, hype doesn’t woo consumers and ideas 
don’t really take off. As we approach the end of 2014, here’s a look at 
the tech products that people went crazy about and those that failed to 
meet expectations.

Hits

1. Facebook Messenger

Facebook Messenger has been one of the biggest hits this year, even when people complained about it.</div>
So when Facebook moved the messaging feature away from the main 
social networking app, users cried foul as it meant they had to download
 a separate app to chat with their friends. The privacy-brouhaa started 
soon after the launch, and many reports wrongly accused Facebook 
Messenger for snooping on users for demanding access to your contacts and a full access to the network. None of this was of course true.

All criticism aside, Facebook Messenger was a hit and crossed 500 
million users and topped the charts of the Apple App store and Google 
Play Store. Guess Zuckerberg and David Marcus who was bought in to head 
Messenger this year, were right on this strategy.

2. Microsoft Office for iOS and Android

After Satya Nadela took the helm of Microsoft, he took everyone by 
surprise by announcing the launch of<a href="http://technewsgh.blogspot.com/2014/11/microsoft-anounces-office-apps-for.html" target="_blank"> Office apps on the iPad </a>in early 
2014. Despite the presence of alternative office apps on the App store, 
the Office app by Microsoft became an instant hit thanks to the familiar
 features users were accustomed to with their desktops.

Later this year, the app was switched from the freemium model to 
making the app completely free for iOS and Android devices, which caused
 it to become one of the top three apps on the App store. Finally one big step from Microsoft that wooed its users.

3. Apple iPhone 6

Despite the series of controversies over the design and operating 
system, the latest iteration of the iPhone, the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 
Plus have broken smartphone records. Within 24 hours of launching, Apple <a href="http://www.apple.com/pr/library/2014/09/15Apple-Announces-Record-Pre-orders-for-iPhone-6-iPhone-6-Plus-Top-Four-Million-in-First-24-Hours.html" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">reported</a>
 pre-order sales of a whopping four million units. The iPhone 6, in 
particular, has been a key driver of Apple’s growth, which crossed the 
$700 million market cap in the US this year.

This was also the smartphone that ensured Apple’s entry into the 
phablet arena, something Apple had resisted for a long time. Now Apple 
has two huge-screen smartphones to offer and despite the high-price tag,
 Apple fans have been clamouring to get their hands on these.

4. Asus Zenfones

Asus entered the Indian smartphone market this year with the launch of its Zenfone 4, Zenfone 5 and Zenfone 6 handsets.
 The phones were strategically priced to cater to the the budget and 
mid-range segment. But unlike many other low-cost smartphones, the 
Zenfones were found to get all the basics right, with nippy Intel 
processors, high resolution displays and good cameras. The phones became
 an instant hit and Asus revealed that it sold over 40,000 units of the Zenfone series within four days of launching in India.

Misses

1. Firefox OS smartphones

Firefox OS smartphones were launched in India this year with an aim 
to charm the low-budget smartphone segment. However, the few Firefox-OS 
based phones that were launched in India come with deplorable hardware
 in order to keep a sub-Rs 2,000 cost price and have failed to catch on 
with the burgeoning entry-level smartphone market in India.

2. Early Android One smartphones

Google announced it the promising Android One programme, with the 
idea to bring a pure Android experience to low cost smartphones. Google 
used India as the launchpad for the programme and announced its 
partnership with homegrown phone makers such as Intex, Micromax and 
Karbonn.

Despite the great initiative, Android One smartphones failed to take off
 in a big way as Android One reportedly offered thin margins to 
retailers who were selling them. As major retailers in India refuse to 
stock them, consumers have found it difficult to buy the early models of
 Android One devices. Plus the fact that all three manufacturers were 
offering the exact same specs, meant that users weren’t exactly spoiled 
for choice when it came to features.

3. Google Glass

Announced two years ago, there was a lot of hope riding on this 
futuristic gizmo by Google. Facebook, NYT, etc, were all building apps 
for  Google Glass. But with Google itself pushing back the Glass roll 
out to the mass market, it has left everyone losing interest in the 
device. This year, Reuters reported that key developers have abandoned the Glass project, as it failed to impress early adopters.

4. Amazon Fire Phone

When Amazon launched its much anticipated Fire Phone,
 on-lookers were rather excited by its glitzy features, though no one 
could really pin down how it would meet any practical uses. Despite 
getting the right hardware and a set of nifty features on its side, 
Amazon has struggled to sell a decent number of Fire Phone units. 
According to <a href="http://www.theguardian.com/technology/2014/aug/26/amazon-fire-phone-sales-data" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">research</a> by comScore and Chitika and some number-crunching by The Guardian, Amazon has sold no more than 35,000 phones.

 Sony's PlayStation 4, becoming the number one selling gaming 
console in
 both the US and the UK for the month of November, according to latest 
figures released by the NPD Group.

PS4 has been consistently topping the sales charts in the US since 
January, but it seems like the holiday season and most importantly the 
recent $50 price cut propelled sales of Microsoft's gaming console.

Confirming the news, Xbox's VP of marketing Mike Nichols told Gamespot, 
 "November set a new record for sales of Xbox One, and Xbox One was the 
best-selling console in the US and UK." Last month, Microsoft announced that the overall sales of Xbox One would shortly hit the 10 million mark, and Geekwire is now reporting that the company sold 1.2 million units in the US during November.

As for software, Activision's Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare topped 
the charts, followed by Rockstar Games' Grand Theft Auto 5, and 
Nintendo's new Super Smash Bros. The Japanese video game company said it
 has sold more than 710,000 copies of Super Smash Bros. for Wii U in the
 US since its launch, adding that AmiiBo sales were "approximately 
equal" to sales of the fighting game.

Overall, video game sales stood at $2.41 billion, down 11 percent 
year-on-year, while hardware sales stood at $1.10 billion, down 23 
percent from $1.31 billion a year ago.

Tonino Lamborghini manufactures luxury products, like watches and accessories. The company's name comes from it founder, who's the son of the late Ferruccio Lamborghini, the man behind Lamborghini cars. 
Only 1,947 88 Tauri devices will be made — the number was chosen for the founder's birth year. 
 
The technical specs aren't groundbreaking — it's in line with already available smartphone options — but this phone is clearly more about showing off wealth than any sort of advanced functionality. 
 
There's a 5-inch HD display and a 2.3GHz quad-core processor. It also
 comes with 64GB of storage and 3GB of RAM. The 20-megapixel camera is a
 bit more impressive, along with the a front-facing 8-megapixel camera. 
The phone is available in real leather (in black, blue, red, orange or brown) and steel (in black, gold or silver). 
Overall, the exorbitant sticker price is pretty much all about that 
Lamborghini name, plus the high-quality build materials and exclusivity 
of the product. There's nothing too forward-thinking about this phone, 
but we doubt the target consumer is overly concerned about that. 
Although this might be a product the rich and famous might want to 
add to a Christmas list, sales don't begin until late December.

 smartphones, the race for the slimmest handset is not over yet. 
Chinese manufacturer Vivo has unveiled the Vivo X5Max, a smartphone that's just 4.75-mm (0.187-inches) thick at its thinnest point.

Besides its incredibly slim profile, the handset seems to be a very 
capable device, with a 5.5-inch, 1080p screen, an octa-core Qualcomm 
Snapdragon 615 processor, 2GB of RAM, 16GB of storage and a 13-megapixel
 camera. 
Engadget, which had some hands-on time
 with the Vivo X5Max, noted that its 2,000mAH battery is definitely not 
the best in class — but that's not surprising from such a thin device. 
In addition, its 13-megapixel camera is responsible for a noticeable 
bump on the phone's back, making it thicker by nearly 2mm (0.07 inches) 
at that point. 
 
Other phones in the "extremely slim" category include the Oppo R5, which is 4.85-mm (0.19-inches) thick, and Huawei Ascend P7, which is 6.6-mm (0.26-inches) thick. 
The Vivo X5Max is expected to hit China Mobile stores for about $490 on Dec. 12.

The Best Android Phones 0f 2014

It’s coming to that time of the year when you might want to grab a 
new smartphone either for yourself, or as a gift for someone during the 
holiday season. Most of the phones that will be coming out this year 
have been announced or launched, so if you want to make up your mind 
about upgrading, this is as stable as it gets in the smartphone world. 
Throughout
 the year I have reviewed and got hands-on time with plenty of devices, 
especially from the Android camp simply because there’s such a sheer 
volume of them on the market today. I’ve used all the flagships from 
HTC, Samsung, LG, Motorola, Sony, and more -- some of those reviews are 
still in the pipeline -- and below I’ve compiled my thoughts on what's 
currently the best out there.  
 
HTC One (M8)

 HTC was one of the first to launch a flagship Android smartphone this year and the fact that the HTC One M8 is making it to this list is testament to the great job they did with it. Built on the principles HTC established with the original One in 2013, adding in new hardware such as the Duo Camera and refining the aluminum design.  
Merit 
There’s a lot to like about the One M8, but if I had to cut it down to just one thing, it’d probably be the design. The aluminum unibody looks great and feels awesome to hold. HTC improved the ergonomics considerably over the previous-generation One and managed to enhance the BoomSound speakers in the process. Of all the Android handsets released in 2014, the second-generation One definitely looks the best.  
Demerit 
As much as the Duo Camera is an interesting feature that allows you to apply cool effects to your photos, the camera as a whole is underwhelming. Compared to the competition, the HTC One M8 simply can’t keep up in most conditions, especially in terms of resolution where the four megapixel sensor disappoints. It may have an advantage in low light scenarios, but the new One is far from a high quality flagship camera.

There were no surprises when Samsung announced their latest high-end device, the highly anticipated Galaxy S5. Packing a new fingerprint sensor and heart rate monitor, Samsung made a big deal of the device being suited for fitness and activity, packing top notch hardware into a waterproof case for the first time.  
Merit 
It’s a tossup between the display and camera for what I like the most, with the latter just edging it out. It’s not the greatest in dark conditions with its f/2.2 lens and 1.12µm pixels, but at all other times it excels. The 16-megapixel sensor is simply fantastic in sunlight, delivering sharp, accurate and vibrant images loaded with detail. The provided HDR mode is also by far the best of any smartphone, and 4K recording is always a handy inclusion.  
Demerit 
The aforementioned fingerprint scanner and heart rate monitor are gimmicks, failing to make any meaningful improvement to the smartphone and not necessarily functioning perfectly. On top of that Samsung's design still feels behind the competition. Though there were improvements in this area, it still looks and feels cheap, which is less than ideal for an expensive flagship.  
 
LG G3

The LG G3 was no minor revision to the well-regarded G2. The company packed in new and improved hardware, including a 5.5-inch Quad HD display and the laser autofocus assisted 13-megapixel camera with OIS, as well as a much better software offering.  
Merit 
The edge-to-edge 5.5-inch IPS LCD display is one of the standout features of the G3, and makes me want to come back and use it regardless of which smartphone I’m reviewing at the time. There isn’t a huge difference in clarity between the Quad HD resolution and similar 1080p panels, but the sharpness is definitely impressive. Paired with great color quality and a decent amount of real estate in a surprisingly compact body, the G3’s display is a definite favourite.  
Demerit 
The new display comes with the downside of a having hit on performance and battery life. The G2 carried top of the line battery life but the same can’t be said of the G3. The performance hit isn’t as important, though in some taxing 3D games the GPU simply can’t render frames as frequently as it can on a 1080p handset. 
 
Sony Xperia Z3

Sony has released two flagship smartphones this year thanks to their strange six month release cycle, the first being the quite decent Xperia Z2, and now the Z3. It’s a minor upgrade on what came before it, though the changes help refine the package and make for a very well-rounded device.  
Merit 
The entire handset feels like a top-notch, premium product that delivers both on a design and hardware perspective. We’re talking about a waterproof aluminum body, Snapdragon 801 SoC inside, 20-megapixel rear camera, and great battery life. That last point is especially crucial, with Sony clearly understanding how important it is to have a long-lasting smartphone.  
Demerit 
It would appear the Xperia Z3 is lacking a "killer feature" but there are no obvious omissions either. Also, Sony’s smartphone strategy at the moment is somewhat unclear: releasing a new flagship every six months make buyers of the Z2 feel like their handset is outdated quite quickly. Will this happen again with the Xperia Z3? I sure hope not.

Alongside the Z3, Sony released the Z3 Compact catering to folks who don’t want such a large handset. With a 4.6” display and essentially the same internal hardware as the Z3, the Z3 Compact is a great choice if size (and battery life) are major considerations.  
Merit 
The Z3 Compact is one of the few Android smartphones on the market that combine flagship hardware with a smaller-than-usual form factor, and does so successfully. Not everyone wants a 5.2-inch or 5.5-inch phone, so the 4.6-inch Z3 Compact is very attractive in this respect. Let’s not forget it also has a powerful Snapdragon 801 inside, waterproof body, and the same 20-megapixel camera from the Z3, plus astonishing battery life.  
Demerit 
For the market this smartphone is occupying, there’s not much to dislike. However, as with the Z3, I’m not a huge fan of Sony’s software skin that fails to add any interesting, standout features, and it does look a bit antiquated in comparison to stock Android and recent skins from HTC or LG.  
 
Motorola Moto X (2014)

The original Moto X was a crowd favorite even though it skipped on high-end specs, it made up with phenomenal ergonomics and customization options. This year Motorola has released a new version, including better hardware, a refined design with a larger AMOLED display, and improved software.  
Merit 
There are two aspects to the Moto X working in tandem that make it such an attractive device. First is the new and improved hardware which includes a powerful Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 SoC, similarly attractive ergonomics, an excellent 5.2-inch 1080p display and much-needed camera upgrade. Combined with excellent contextual software and always-on voice controls, the new Moto X is a great mix of solid hardware and software. 
Demerit 
Some aspects are still slightly behind the competition, notably the camera and battery. The 2014 Moto X may be far ahead when software is concerned with a very clean Android experience, but some of the always-on features hamper battery life, which doesn’t appear to be as good as its competitors. The camera, while improved, also fails to stand up to the flagship powerhouses in this area.  
 
Samsung Galaxy Note 4

Samsung has been perfecting the large-screen Note formula for a few years now, and with a refined design and cutting-edge hardware, this is best Android phablet yet.  
Merit 
The use of metal around the edges of the Galaxy Note 4 finally makes this handset feel premium. Samsung has listened to the past criticism and noticeably improved the design, and I welcome it. Top notch performance is a given (Snadragon 805 or Exynos 5433 inside), and OIS adds to an already great camera sensor. If you don't mind the size, it's the best Samsung device in the market.  
Demerit 
TouchWiz still seems bloated and visually mediocre, as Samsung hasn’t put a huge amount of emphasis on changing what they delivered in the Galaxy S5.

The HTC One M8
 comes with Android KitKat 4.4.2, which is a significant improvement 
over the previous versions of Android that we have had the chance to 
experience with other smartphones. 
To power the operating system, the HTC One M8 features a quad core 
2.3GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor as well as 2GB of RAM. The 
device also features an impressive 4.7 inch Super LCD3 display, which is
 covered by Corning Gorilla Glass 3. 
To accompany the truly impressive display, the HTC One M8 comes with 
two perfectly placed “BoomSound” speakers. The two speakers are located 
on the top and bottom of the front end of the device. This is done in

Weighing in at 430 grams, the Acer K135 LED Projector

When it comes to corporate use, the K135 LED Projector’s bright 500 
Lumens Lamp performs rather well. Spreadsheets and PowerPoint 
presentation can be seen clearly especially when displaying content in 
High-Definition. While the K135 projector performs well in most 
environments, much like most projectors, it does however need a semi 
dark environment in order to showcase its full potential. 
When it comes to entertainment, the darker the environment the
